About

A large liquor store in the Wine Shop Takeda group, founded in 1906. As the name suggests it covers wine, Japanese wine, craft beer, shochu, coffee, and snacks, but it is strongly recommended for seeing jizake from across Japan while in Okayama City. The shop states officially that it is an authorized dealer for the breweries, and the key point is that sake bought directly from breweries nationwide is kept in refrigerators or near-freezing cabinets and sold at list price.

How to buy

The sake list is published on the official site, and since stock and quantities of popular labels, seasonal releases, and scarce bottles differ by store, calling ahead is advisable. Limited-quantity items can be reserved, and the reserved-products page shows whether reservations are open and the arrival status. Seasonal items such as Dassai Funabakumi and Kamoshibito Kuheiji Usunigori are handled through separate reservations: one for in-store pickup only and one online for shipping only. The shop is currently cutting back on cushioning material for bottles, so if you plan to buy several, bring your own bag and padding.

Getting there

The Shinbo branch is a large store in Minami-ku, Okayama City, set up for arriving by car, and it has parking. Weekend afternoons between 12:00 and 15:00 are the busiest, but the store is spacious and open until 20:00, so it is easy to fit into a travel route. Rather than a small shop dealing only in sake, it is a shopping-style store where you can browse wine, beer, snacks, and glassware together.
