The shop looks small but carries over 1,000 items at all times, and many of the bottles in the refrigerated cases can be tasted. The staff know sake well and will pick something that fits once you describe your taste, and they are often praised for being welcoming to foreign visitors. Large refrigerators keep everything at low temperature, and gift wrapping is neatly done.

How to buy

Stocked at list price, from Shizuoka classics such as Seisetsu, Hatsukame, Eikun, and Kikuyoi to hard-to-find labels such as Senkin, Hanaabi, Jikon, and Hiroki. That said, ultra-popular limited bottles like Jikon are sometimes sold only as part of a set rather than individually. Arrival news goes out first on Instagram (@kuboyamasaketen) and by email newsletter, so following and subscribing helps. If you are carrying bottles a long way, cooler bags and ice packs cost extra (30 yen per ice pack), so bringing your own is easier.

Getting there

Close to the Shimizu IC on the Tomei Expressway, and not far from Shimizu Station either. The parking lot is a little away from the shop and hard to find, so first-time visitors should ask the staff where it is.
